Parents: Henry William Barker and Sarah Margaret Nolan.

Henry died in 1852 of cholera when the family was moving to the Oregon Territory.


Jesse Nolan Barker married Mary Jane Gilmore in 1849 in Missouri. Mary Jane died in Feb. 1867 in Douglas Co., Oregon.

Jesse married Mary Virginia Smith, widow of Dr. L. G. London, on 28 February 1871 in Douglas Co., OR. They moved to Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington ca 1880 although they are listed in the 1880 Census as being in Douglas Co. OR. At the time of their move to Washington, it was still Washington Territory. The State of Washington was admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889 as the 42nd U.S. state.

Jesse and Mary Jane had the following children:

Isabelle G., b. ca 1851 in Missouri; she married James M. Hudson 17 Sept. 1871 in Douglas Co., OR. James was born ca 1847.

Henry Clay, b. 7 July 1852 in Oregon; d. 5 Sept. 1936 in Spokane, Spokane Co, WA.

James H., b. ca 1853 in Oregon

Sarah C., b. ca 1854 in Douglas Co., OR; married Vernile F. Hopkins 30 Dec. 1873 in Douglas Co., OR; Vernile was b. ca 1823.

Mary Frances, b. ca 1855 in Douglas Co., OR; m. Menelius Chapman 29 March 1877 in Douglas Co., OR. Menelius b. 14 March 1852 in Johnson Co., Iowa. Note on Menelius: He was known as "Curly". In 1920 he was residing in Carleton, WA.

Missouri Ann, b. 4 March 1857, Winchester, Douglas Co., OR.

Thomas J., b. ca 1860 in Douglas Co., OR.

Leathia, b. ca 1863 in Douglas Co., OR.

Jesse, II, b. ca 1865 also in Douglas Co., OR


Jesse and Mary Virginia Smith London Barker had one son of record, Rev. John P. Barker (Methodist/Episcopal) born Feb., 1872, Douglas Co., OR. Married Maude Hurst, 1894, WA.

They also had one daughter of record, Katie (Ella) B. Barker born Feb. 10., 1878, Douglas Co., OR. She died 1938, Spokane Co., WA and was unmarried. She was an Assistant Secretary for a school board.

There is a M. Barker also buried in this cemetery but at this time not known if related to Jesse's family.
