Norman was the nephew of my great grandfather, Edward Meckley- Norman's father Jacob and Ed Meckley were brothers. I spoke with Norman several times on the telephone, and truly enjoyed his lively personality and willingness to share stories about his life and his family.

Norman's Uncle Ed had been once married to my great grandmother Susan. Ed and Susan had a daughter Fay, who was my father's mother, and Ed was my dad's grandpa, though they never knew one another. After Ed's first marriage ended, his first wife moved away to Lehigh County away from the Meckley family, so none of us after his daughter ever knew Ed. Norman's recollections very kindly helped me form a picture in my mind of this ancestor I never knew.

Norman had a variety of jobs over his life. He had a Capitol Bakery bread route, and worked in a grocery. He was employed for a time in the wire rope division of Bethlehem Steel in Williamsport, as was his son.

Though in his 90's when I spoke with him, Norman's recollections about the family were very clear. He had living memory of my grandmother, his cousin, and used to visit her during the time she lived locally or came to visit. He also remembered when she came back to town on the train with her mother for the divorce hearing, which ended Ed's marriage to my great grandmother after a lengthy separation, when Ed was to marry again. Ed actually remarried in 1913 so Norman was pulling up memories from when he was maybe age five, 80 some years earlier. Very impressive.

A funny thing to recall, and this is only my impression, but I had the feeling Norman avoided speaking of his wife very much, and I believe there may have been a lot of love there.

Beyond the family information Norman spoke of, I will always remember his pride in having served his country in World War II. He told me some wonderful stories- some funny, some heart-rending, but all worth hearing.

Norman was a cook in the Navy aboard the USS Piedmont (AD-17) a destroyer-tender. He particularly recalled Hawaii and Nana Reetock, but I believe I may have misunderstood this latter place when it should have been Eniwetok (or as it has been called since 1974, "Enewetak") which is a coral atoll and part of the Marshall Islands. He recalls the ship got word the war was over at 12 noon, and the next day was in a convoy to Japan, five ships behind the Missouri. He quoted his discharge papers as noting he'd served 3 years, 2 months, and 2 days.
