Dies at 82.

William A. Hill, 82, of Highland, Hammond, former High school principal and father-in-law of E.C. Minas Jr., Hammond merchant, died at 8 a.m. today in his home.

His son, Irving Hill of East Lansing, Mich., and a daughter Mrs. Paul Cornelisen of Falls Church, Va., came to Hammond when Hill's illness of four years duration took a serious turn.

He died of a heart ailment.
Other survivors are his widow, the former Miss Carrie Hammond, daughter of one of Hammond's pioneers and a past mayor; a daughter, Mrs. E.C. Minas Jr. of 7306 Forest, Hammond, and two half-brothers, Ernest Hill of Lansing, Mich., and Wesley Hill of Jacksonville, Fla.

Hill was born near Romeo, Mich., and was graduated from Valparaiso university.He obtained a master of arts degree from the University of Chicago.

After teaching out of the state and in East Chicago, Hill came to Hammond and was named principal of Hammond High school in 1894, a position he held for 15 years. At the same time he taught book-keeping and commercial subjects.
He was married in 1897.

A.L. Spohn, present principal, was a teacher at Hammond High at the time Hill was principal.

After leaving the high school, Hill served a year in a positon as supervisor of Hammond principals.

In 1913 Hill became secretary-treasurer of the United Boiler, Heating & Foundry Co. in Hammond.

For a number of years he was a director of the Lake County Title & Guaranty Co. He also was active in politics serving as secretary of the Hammond Republican party for two years, was a candidate for Lake county treasurer and was elected to two terms as a joint state representative from Lake and Porter counties.

While in that office, he was one of the sponsors of the bill which paved the way for the Indiana Dunes State Park.
Hill was an early member of the Hammond chamber of commerce and a Mason.

In later years he became president of the old First Trust & Savings bank in Calumet City and remained in that post until the bank was merged with the Calumet City State Bank.

Before retiring Hill was clerk of the Hammond park board for eight years.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Staturday in the First Baptist church in Hammond, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.

Son-in-law E.C. Minas Jr. is married to his daughter Adelaide Hammond (Hill) Minas. Son-in-law Paul Cornelisen is married to his daughter Pauline Esther Hill. William and his only wife Carrie (Hammond) Hill (who were married on 16 June 1897) are buried in her parents Thomas and Helen (Potter) Hammond family lot of 14 graves.
