Joseph L. Campbell

Joseph L. Campbell, 78, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at his winter residence in Leesburg, Fla. He was a longtime resident of Franklin.

He was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Kentucky. His parents were Milford and Edith (Beal) Campbell. As a teenager, he was raised by Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Records of the Union community. He married Sarah "Betty" (Canary) Campbell on Feb. 14, 1947. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Susan Levett of Austin, Texas, and Rebecca Cape of Spencer; a son, Dr. Joseph W. Campbell of Divide, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Winkler, Veloria Stanhope and Addie Scott; and one brother, Clifford W. Campbell.

He was a graduate of Franklin High School and attended Purdue University.

He was employed by Arvin Automotive for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was a production manager at the Franklin Arvin plant.

He was a member of Union Christian Church, where he served in various offices, including trustee for a number of years and as general board chairman. He was also a member of American Legion Post 252 in Greenwood, VFW Post 2552 in Franklin, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Armor Association, Johnson County Historical Society and Purdue Club of Johnson County. He was a former district chairman of Central Indiana Council of Boy Scouts, where he was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. He served in the 750th Tank Battalion in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge, and in the Army of Occupation in Berlin after the end of the war. He was a recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation and French Croix De Guerre.

The Revs. Paul Palusko and Earl Davis will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, where a military service will be conducted.
