She was born August 22, 1902 at Barnard, Kansas, the daughter of James Edward (J.E.) and Hannah Jane (Jennie) Burkepile Hunter.
She was a 1920 high school graduate of Barnard, Kansas.; B.S. from Ft. Hays Kansas State University, Hays, Kansas.; M.A. from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado. She taught school at the following: Lincoln area (Pinon, Union Four) and in the following towns: in Kansas- Brownell, Weskan, Tribune; in Colorado - Louisville, Westwood and finally at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver for 20 years, teaching adult clothing and textiles, retiring from there in 1967. She was a member of national, state and local teachers associations; Kappa Omicron Phi, Delta Zeta Sorority; Delta Kappa Gamme Society, Eastern Star, and a member of the Central Presbyterian Church of Denver, Colorado.
Bertha had many interests beyond her teaching and some were china and oil painting, reading, gourmet cooking, genealogy and traveling.
On June 25, 1950, she married Dr. Harrison Talhelm, a dentist, at Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1966.
Out of a family of fifteen children only one sister, Ruth Hunter, of Wichita, Kansas survives her. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews.
Funeral was held on May 6, 1996 at 11 A.M. at the Hall Mortuary, Lincoln, Kansas with her niece, the Rev. Barbara Hunter-Parker presiding. Graveside service and burial was at the Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, Kansas.
