Son of Daniel Boone Willcockson and Catherine Griggs.

He was orphaned by the age of seven, and was raised by his mother's parents, John "Jack" and Nancy Barnett Griggs, Jr. After their deaths, he was on his own by age seventeen.

He first married Mary A. T. Mustain on Aug. 12, 1875, in Boone Co., MO. She was the daughter of John L. Mustain and Sarah Jane Poe.

John lived in Jefferson Township, Woodward Co., OK, in the 1930 Census with son, Grover B. Wilcox and family, while Fannie lived as a "widow" in Kansas City, MO.

According to his death certificate, John's informant, John W. Wilcox (Jr.), did not know where John, Sr. was born. Missouri was first entered, then crossed out in favor of Kentucky. The informant also did not know the identities of John's parents. "Grigg" was written on the mother's line, then crossed out.

John was a descendant of Sarah Boone, sister of the famous Daniel Boone. She married John Willcockson, Sr.
