Hardie married Nancy Florence "Nannie" Moseley on 13 Oct 1874 at Newnan, Coweta, GA. In the 1870s, Hardie was one of 12 related families that chartered a train and moved to Texas from Georgia. In 1880, he was living in Eastland county. By 1900, he was living at Bowie, Montague county, Texas, where he founded the chain stores called Duke and Ayres. The first store was called Duke, Teal and Ayres. By 1910, he had relocated the business and his family to Dallas. Hardie was a Baptist. As a strong believer in tithing, he traveled around the country speaking on the subject and how it had impacted his life. He was the father of one child, Lillian Georgia (Duke) Ayres, who is also buried at Oakland Cemetery.
