Effie Leona "Onie" Nelson Atkinson died Saturday, April 27, 2003, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Savannah, Georgia, of complications from congestive heart failure.
She was a native of Coffee County and had lived most of her life in Savannah. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Her husband, Howard H. Atkinson, preceded her in death.
Survivors: Son, Jerry Atkinson, Sr. (Sandi) of Hewitt, Texas; daughter, Patricia E. Walden (Dennis) of Leesburg, Florida; brother, George Nelson of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Nell Long, of Rincon; grandchildren, Howie Atkinson of Savannah, Jerry Atkinson, Jr. of Savannah, Patricia Brown of Raleigh, NC, Donna Chappas of Asheville, ND, Mark Hodges of Savannah, and Kim Futch, of Savannah. In addition, Mrs. Nelson had three step-grandchildren all of Orlando, Florida, Genie Brown, Diana Stillwell, and Michael Smith. She had six great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. (The above was taken from her obituary in the Savannah News.)
