Mrs. William T. Loftus
The influence of a life devoted to the highest ideals of home and society is immeasurable. Such a life was that of Mrs. Mary A. Milet Loftus who passed to eternal rest at the family home on Madison Streetin this village at an early hour of Saturday, December 24. She had been confined to her bed for but ten days.

Mrs. Loftus was born in the city of Brooklyn on Jan. 1, 1855, coming to this town while yet a young girl. She was united in marriage with William T. Loftus on Nov. 27, 1877, at St. John's Church, Utica. Their first home was on a farm near the village of Madison.

In 1880 Mr. Loftus entered the employ of C. I. Peck, prominent agriculturist of the town of Marshall, and a few years later took over the conduct of the Peck home and dairy farm where they remained for several years, later purchasing Meadowbrook Farm on the Deansboro-Waterville road where Mrs. Loftus' real and efficiency in domestic arts was a large factor in the success that crowned their wedded life. Gentle and tolerant, hospitable and generous, her home was a delightful meeting place for a large circle of relatives and friends, while her table was one that would tempt an anchorite to surfeit.

Following the death of Mr. Loftus on April 7, 1827, the family moved to this village where they have since resided. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Elizabeth A. Loftus and Mrs. Alice L. Jordan, and four sons, James P. Loftus of Waterville, W. Fay Loftus of Deansboro, H. Milet Loftus of Ontario Center and Fred J. Loftus of Great Bend, Pa. She also leaves seven grandchildren.

The funeral was held from St. Bernard's Church at 9:30 on Tuesday where an unusually large gathering testified to the fine qualities of heart and mind embodied in the life of the deceased. Interment was made at St. Bernard's Cemetery. The bearers were Clayton Waterman and William Nolan of Waterville, and John Milet, Robert Loftus, L. Henry Loftus and Dr. George L. Russell of Utica.
