He was born on a farm in Delaware County, Iowa on April 30, 1923 to Edgar and Asenath Woodbury McCloud.
He graduated from Manchester Iowa High School where he was Senior Class President, enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned an ensign. He flew carrier-based fighters until 1952. He married Catherine Conlan in 1952.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and MS degree from Bradley University.
Austin worked at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory in Peoria, Illinois at International Harvester Motor Truck Engineering Laboratory in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and at the Conoco Research Department. He retired from Conoco in 1978.
He wrote several papers on fuels, lubricants and hydraulic oils, which were published by such organizations as The Society of Automotive Engineers, The American Society of Lubrication engineers and the University of Milwaukee. He received an award for the best paper on lubricating greases in 1975. Was active in the Society of Automotive Engineers where he was chairman of the Mid-Continent Section, the American Society for Testing Materials and the Coordinating Research Council.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers and sisters. Austin is survived by several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 18, 2008 at St. Luke's on the Lake Episcopal Church, 5600 RR 620 N., Austin, Texas 78732 with Reverend Parker Jameson officiating.
