"Elijah Merchant, (was) a circuit riding preacher for the Methodists in 1853. Rev. Mr. Merchant made Bidwell Bar his headquarters for the Plumas circuit. He had upwards of 20 regular preaching points on his circuit and a number of irregular ones. Rev. Merchant traveled high up into the mountains in addition to visiting communities down in the valley and along the Sacramento River. This must have been hard on man and beast with poor financial support and hay at $140 a ton. In that same year he built the Mother Church of Butte County in Forbestown."
