He was a pilot and captain on the Chancelor at Belmont, Fort Henry, Fort Donaldson. He carried troops to Pittsburg Landing at the battle of Shiloh during the Civil War, U.S., and ordered to report to Cairo, Il. He was Capt. of the Mississippi Squadron and pilot of the USS Naiad in 1864 during the Civil War. Honorable discharge in 1865 by Admiral Lee. He and Jennie Murray Stewart had three children, Mary Bethiah, Rella and Murray Stewart. Rella and Murray never married. Mary Bethiah married, but she did not have any children.
