Dr. Arthur L. Ball, 68, of Coal Center R.D.a, retired head of the California University of Pennsylvania secondary education department, died at 11:55 a.m. Sunday, February 16, 1992, in Mon Valley Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born March 7, 1923, in Beallsville, he was a son of Harvey and Freda Gerberding Ball.
Mr. Ball was a member of First Presbyterian church of Bentleyville, where he served as an elder; was a Sunday school teacher for the men's class; was a former superintendent of the Sunday school; was a former member of the clerk of sessions; and was a member of the choir.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army / Air Force from January 1943 until February 1946.
A member of the Beallsville F & AM Lodge 237, Mr. Ball graduated from Bentleyville High School in 1940 and attended University of Nebraska and South Dakota State College in 1943.
He was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College in 1950 and received his master's degree in education from Duquesne University in 1953 and his doctorate from University of Pittsburgh in 1955.
Mr. Ball taught social studies in the former Monongahela High School from 1950 - 1953; taught at W & J from 1953 - 1964; and taught at California University of Pennsylvania from 1964 until his retirement in 1984. He was ahead of secondary education at California University.
On January 1, 1943, he married Dorothy Frederick, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Nancy L.) Smiley of Huntsville, Ala.; two sons, Gregory Stuart Ball of Beaver Falls and Brian Douglas Ball of North Huntingdon; seven granddaughters, Jennifer Pulis, Linda Connors and Karen, Stephanic, Amanda, Kimberly and Ashley Ball; four grandsons, Thomas Arthur Smiley, Brian D. Ball Jr. and Zachary and Alexander Ball; one great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Mrs. Hadd (Dorothy) Morrison of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Robert Eleanor Bennett of Bellevue, Washington.
