I have removed the parent links that were previously listed here due to a suggested edit by contributor: Arabelle. She states the following, "Eli was indeed the son of a Henry Davis (who died in 1832), but not the one linked here. His "mother" was Nancy Potts Davis. I put that in quotes because there is a strong theory out there (as well as a family tradition passed down from Eli, himself) that he was born of Henry Potts by one of his Native American slaves, rather than his wife, Nancy."
I would like to clarify and correct my previous statement, after having been in touch recently with an expert regarding this story. Eli's mother was an African slave (not Native American) named Mary Dayhuff.
Although his father was married to Nancy Potts Davis at the time and had had children with her, he had Eli with one of his slaves outside of his marriage to Nancy. It is unknown by me or this family expert whether or not Eli was raised by his mother or in the household of his father with his wife and legitimate siblings. However, it appears that it was well known that Eli was indeed Henry's illegitimate son. After Henry's death in 1832, Eli was distributed a share of his father's estate. However, after this occurred, his legitimate half-brothers, told him to "get lost," and that is exactly what he did.
