Obed moved to California with family members, but came back after a few years to marry his "childhood sweetheart," Eva Crouch. The couple returned to Siskiyou County, settled in Quartz Valley and started their family of four children: Irene, Ina Mae, Viola and Otis. Tragically, daughter Ina Mae died in 1915.
The children attended the one-room schoolhouse near their home in Quartz Valley until the eldest daughter had finished grammar school and was ready for high school. Then the Bottoms family moved to Etna where there was a high school for her to attend.
Obed died in 1940 and was buried in the Fort Jones Cemetery. Eva lived as a single person the rest of her years, spending time with her friends and family in Scott Valley. She played piano, was active in her church and other social activities, and took an interest in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
