Arley Joe (AJ or Joe) Wassom passed away on March 4th. Joe was born on Mother’s Day (May 8) in 1927 to Howard Oak Wassom and Nancy Elizabeth (Fugett) Wassom at Laurens, IA. He grew up on the family farm. After graduating from Laurens HS in 1944, he attended the Univ. of Iowa, graduating with a BA and JD Law degrees. He served as a Lt. in the Army Reserves (Infantry).

In 1950, Joe joined Mary Esther Tribbey in marriage until Mary’s death in 2003. Joe practiced law in Osceola, IA for 4 years before taking a job as an adjuster with United Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, working in Cedar Rapids, IA and then (1959) in Sioux Falls, SD. About 1970, he began working as an independent insurance adjuster as well as an attorney and was active in both professions until 2004. Joe was a life-long member of First Christian Church, serving as a deacon and elder. Joe enjoyed gardening, painting, crafts, and loved planting trees, roses, and flowers at the home he shared with Mary for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his Wife, Mary; Daughter, Susan; Parents; and Brothers, Harold and Richard.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at First Christian Church, 524 W 13th Street. Visitation will be on Friday, March 6, 2009 starting at 11:00 AM at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main. Family will be present from 4-6 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM.
