RALPH NISKANEN
December 30, 1938 ~ January 30, 2011

Trout Lake, WA resident Ralph Raymond Niskanen, passed away at his home Jan. 30, 2011 at the age of 72. He was born in Vancouver, WA to Gertrude (Lehto) and Arnold G. Niskanen on Dec. 30, 1938. When Ralph was a baby, the family moved from Vancouver to North Dakota, where they lived for five years. They returned to the Vancouver area and Ralph graduated from Battle Ground High School.
He joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge from military service, he came home to Vancouver.
Ralph met Linda VanBuskirk, a coworker, and the two married on Jan. 25, 1969, less than a month after their first date. Ralph and Linda enjoyed forty-two years of marriage. Shortly after the wedding, the couple moved to Trout Lake and Ralph began working for Broughton Lumber Company. When Broughton closed, he went to work for SDS Lumber Company, retiring as a lumber grader.
Mr. Niskanen, being 100% Finnish, was extremely proud of his heritage. He and Linda often traveled to Finn Fest USA, an annual celebration of Finnish culture.
He loved the outdoors and had a passion for camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. Ralph spent a lot of time in the woods, enjoying hunting trips on horseback.
Mr. Niskanen is survived by his wife, Linda Niskanen of Trout Lake; son, Gus Niskanen of The Dalles; daughter Renee Wuollet and her husband, Dan of Trout Lake; son, Paul Dalziel of Longview, WA; son Kirk Dalziel and his wife, Suzie of White Salmon, WA; brothers, Clarence Niskanen of White Salmon and Carl Niskanen of Vancouver/Apache Junction, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Trout Lake on Saturday, February 5, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be given to Hospice of the Gorge or the Trout Lake Fire Department.
