"Obituary -- Rufus Maynard
Below we print a sketch of the life of Rufus Maynard, whose death we chronicled briefly in last week's issue of the Courier:
Rufus Maynard was born in Homestead [Olmstead] county, Minnesota, on November 8th, 1860. In 1868 he came with his parents to Union county, settling on the farm in Richland township, which was his home until his demise on Monday of last week. He never married and has always made his home with his father, Solomon Maynard. His was a life of misfortune, yet the illnesses and physical injuries which he suffered did not in the least mar his kindly and jovial disposition and it always seemed his aim to inject cheer and happiness in the home. He was a man of excellent character and habits and the embracing of the Christian life and spirit helped him to command the respect and admiration of his associates. From childhood he had never been strong physically and for the last year of his life he was practically helpless. While it was known his life on this earth was nearing a close yet the end came as a severe blow to his aged father who had loved and cared for him so many years.
.
Besides the aged father, Solomon Maynard, there remains to mourn his loss two brothers, Chauncey C. Maynard and Otis R. Maynard of Richland township; two sisters, Ethina Maynard who makes her home with the father, and Mrs. Lillie Cook, of Sioux City. The mother and one brother have proceeded him to the great beyond.
.
The sympathy of all is with the aged father, brothers and sisters in this sad hour.
.
The funeral was conducted from the home Wednesday of last week, Rev. Wilson of Wakefield, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Richland cemetery."
