Alanson Willard Cormany was born on April 17, 1872 in Marion, Virginia. He was the second youngest child of Mahlon Sebastian Cormany, a Civil War veteran, and his wife, the former Sarah Elizabeth Hutton, followed in birth order by his sister Georgia Alma (1877-1970), and his brother Marco Denton Cormany (1881-1939). During his lifetime, he went by the nickname "Lanson."

Alanson married Alberta May "Bertie" Pafford on June 26, 1898, and they welcomed their first child Lizzie Kate (1899-1971) the following year. Their other children were Roscoe (1901-1978), Marvin Denton (1904-1989), Imon Gray (1906-1989), and Ruby Grethel (1909-1912).

Lanson was killed while working at a local quarry on December 19, 1909 in Marion, Virginia, when his five children were still very young. Marvin Denton Cormany, the younger of his two sons and my great-grandfather, was only five years old, and Ruby, the youngest, was only eight months old. His widow Bertie never remarried, and died on August 15, 1966 at the age of 89, fifty-seven years after Lanson's death.
