Ella's obituary, in the Record Courier, 26 May 1955, said she attended schools in Missouri, she graduated from the Chillicothe Normal School, and taught school in Hale, Missouri.

Ella Lee (HARGROVE) STEEL was born 31 December 1885, in Hale, Missouri to James and Sarah (GLENN) HARGROVE. She passed away after a long illness.

In 1907 she married Charles KESTER, who preceded her in death in 1922. Ella moved to Oregon in 1924 and married Frank Bland STEEL, 8 December 1925 in Baker. They lived in Pleasant Valley, Durkee and moved to Baker about ll years before her death.

She was a member of Esther Chapter 11, Order of Eastern Star and of the Rebekah Lodge, also a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors included her husband, Frank B. Steel, Baker; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Buford, Port Orchard, Wash; one son, Horace KESTER, Durkee; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ella is listed on the 1900 Census, Chillicothe Township, Livingston County, Missouri. Sheet 3A, E.D. 91, Dwelling 47, Family 48. She is listed as daughter, born Dec. 1886, age 13, born in Missouri. She is living with her father, James Hargrove [age 50, born Mar. 1850 in Kentucky], her mother Sarah [age 42, born May 1858 in Missouri] and brother Frank [age 16, born July 1883 in Missouri]. James is a farmer who does not own the land but rents. There is also a Joseph Glenn listed as B-in-law, age 22, born in Feb 1878 in Missouri, living in the same household.

Ella is on the 1910 census for Haines, Baker County, Oregon, Sheet 4A, stamped 153, E.D. 13, Dwelling 90, Family 90. lines 23-29. She is listed as Ella KESTER, married, age 24. She has been married 3 years and this is her 1st marriage. She is the mother of 1 child. Ella's husband is Charles G. KESTER, age 24, born in Missouri, and he is the proprietor of a Hotel Oregon. Their child is a daughter named Mildred, age 2, born in Missouri. Others listed at this dwelling are servants and boarders.

Research Note: Besides the newspaper obituary, additional information was found in the "Record of Funeral" at the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home in Baker City, Oregon.

Additional Notes: Ella and her first husband, Charles G. KESTER, are on the 1920 census for Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. They evidently moved back to Missouri from Oregon.
