Joe Combs' Services to be Held Saturday
Funeral services for Joseph C. Combs, 71, partner in M.S. Combs & Co., funeral directors, 201 25th avenue North, will be held here tomorrow. The funeral party will leave the chapel at 11:30 a.m. to go to the Vine Street Christian Church, 140 Seventh Ave., North, where the body will lie in state from noon until 2 p.m. when services will be conducted by Dr. G. Curtis Jones, the minister.
Active pallbearers will be employees of M.S. Combs & Co. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Elks and Lions Clubs, of Al Menah Temple and the official board of Vine Street Church, and funeral directors of Davidson County. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Spring Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Combs, who has been ill for several weeks, died at 5:40 p.m. yesterday at St. Thomas Hospital where he had been a patient for the past week for treatment of a heart ailment.
Son of the late Micah Sterling Combs Jr. and Margaret Averitt Combs, Mr. Combs was a native of Nashville and had spent most of his life in the undertaking business which has been in the family for three generations. The firm was established in 1872 by his grandfather, the late Micah Sterling Combs Sr. who came to Nashville from Pulaski.
Mr. Combs attended old Wharton School for Boys here, Burritt College at Spencer and Milligan College at Johnson City.
He was active in the work of Vine Street Christian Church and was a member of the board of deacons, His parents were charter members.
Well known in Nashville and the midstate area, Mr. Combs was also active in civic and fraternal work. He was a past president of the Nashville Lions Club, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, member of the Phoenix Lodge 131 F&AM, and of the Nashville Elks Club.
In earlier days he was in much demand as a singer and was a member of the Vine Street Church choir for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertie Owen Combs; a daughter, Mrs. R.E. Darnell; four sisters, Mrs. Roy L. Gardner, Mrs. Larkin E. Crouch and Mrs. Richard C. Harwell, all of Nashville, and Mrs. Paul E. After his death, S. Gilbert Marshall, who entered the business with another Nashville funeral home in 1934, teamed up with Thomas J. Donnelly to purchase the Combs firm in 1952 from Joe C. Combs' estate. The business continues as Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Directors in 2012.
