Son of Cleo Avery and Jewell Nunn. Married Yvonne Ellen Hyde March 18, 1977. They had no children of their own but Carey raised all seven of his step-children: Steven, Susan, Michael, Nancy, Mary, Ellen and David, and one son, Carey Jr., from a previous marriage. Part of his ashes were taken and thrown at sea in San Diego, California and the other half was thrown in the Pudget Sound waters Anacortes, Washington. He spent twenty two years in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1984 as a Senior Chief Boiler Tech. He comitted sucide by hanging at his home in Blackwell, Oklahoma.
