Lillian Johnson Sunday, July 27, 2003 NAPA Lillian Amalia Johnson passed away July 20, 2003, at the age of 91. Lillian was born on Pine Street in Napa, on a very hot day, July 17, 1912, to Frieda Buhn Wildberger and Julius Charles Wildberger. She was the granddaughter of two German Napa pioneer families. The Wildbergers came to Napa in the mid 1870s. Lillian's grandfather, George Wildberger, was a bricklayer and stonemason. Her father, Julius, was born in Napa in 1878. Lillian's mother's family came to Napa from San Francisco in 1892 [June of 1894] on a riverboat with all of their belongings. Her mother, Frieda, was nine years old and one of six sisters. After they arrived, the Buhn family lived in the Coombsville area. Their home was on the north side of the road where cars enter Coombsville. Only the fireplace stands now (surrounded by vineyards); it is one of the icons of the Napa Valley. Lillian's mother, Frieda, along with her sisters, all attended Harmony School in Coombsville. Her grandfather, Gotlipe [Gottleib] Buhn, was a cooper (barrel maker). Lillian's parents were married in Napa on Aug. 21, 1905. Lillian graduated from Napa High School in 1926. After high school, she worked for Prowdey Jewelry Store in Napa until 1929, when the Depression closed the store. She then became a dental assistant to Dr. Sutro Frost for 12 years. She married Charles Roy "Charlie" Johnson on New Year's Day, 1938, in Reno, Nev. During Lillian's married life she was a secretary to many family businesses (farming, moving and storage, contracting). She also worked in the offices of Parks Victory Hospital and Queen of the Valley Hospital. The family enjoyed many hours of boating on the Napa River. As a fine homemaker and cook, Lillian entertained and prepared meals that included family-gathered wild game and fish and homegrown fruits and vegetables. Lillian lived on Redwood Creek at the end of West Lincoln Avenue for over 50 years. She was happiest there being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Lillian was the last of her generation living in Napa. She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Wildberger; her sister, Mildred W. Naylor; and many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom resided in Napa. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charlie Johnson; her two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Charla Johnson of Hayfork and John and Patty Johnson of Napa; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Private family graveside services will be held Monday, July 28, at Tulocay Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Queen of the Valley Hospital Foundation, P.O.
