MRS. U.S. SMITH DIED YESTERDAY

Former Iowa Wesleyan President's Wife Succumbs After Long Illness

Mrs. Eva Mae SMITH, wife of Dr. U.S. SMITH, pastor of the First Methodist church of this city and former president of Iowa Wesleyan college, passed away yesterday morning at 2:15 o'clock at her home, 301 East Briggs street, after a four years illness with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning from the First Methodist church in charge of District Supterintendent, W.J. Todd of Ottumwa assisted by Dr. W.A. Longnecker of Mt. Pleasant and other Methodist ministers. The sermon will be delivered by Dr. E. J. Shook of Sigourney. Interment will be made in the Evergreen cemetery. The body will be at the home until 2 o'clock Wednesday morning, it will then be taken to the church where it will lie in state until the beginning of the services; the casket will then be closed.

Eva Mae PATTERSON, daughter of Zachary T. and Miranda MCKEE PATERSON (sic. PATTERSON), was born November 2, 1871 on a farm south of Bloomfield, Iowa. She was educated in the rural school and in southern Iowa Normal school and taught school for several years. On August 17, 1892 she was united in marriage to Ulysses S. SMITH at Bloomfield. Dr. SMITH entered the Iowa conference the following September and since they have lived at Montrose, Batavia, Pulaski, What Cheer, Montezuma, Washington, Muscatine, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield. Both Mrs. SMITH and her husband attended Iowa Wesleyan in 1894 and 1895. Later she was to return to Welseyan, where she presided in the President's home, her husband heading the institution from 1914 to 1919 (sic. This appears to be in error: he served as IWC President from 1919 to 1927).

She was united with the Methodist church in Bloomfield when 12 years of age and was active in all departments of church work. She was active in the missionary societies and the Ladies Aid. For more than a quarter of a century she was a member of the P.E.O., her membership at the present one is with the local chapter.

Mrs. SMITH was a quiet unassuming woman of deep convictions and beautiful Christian character. She had rare good judgement which was tactfully expresed and was a willing worker in all of the organizations of the church. Even when her health was failing she attended and always desired to do her part with others. He absence will be sorely felt not alone by her family but by all of the women's organizations of the church.

She was preceded in death by her father, who died in 1925, and her second brother, Earnest PATTERSON, who passed away ten years ago.

Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, who since the death of her husband has lived with her daughter here, two daughters, Mrs. Edward W. KLOPP of Des Moines and Mrs. John I. EWART of McMinnville, Ore., and one grandchild, John Lloyd EWART Jr., all of whom were with her at the time of her death. She also leaves the following brothers: Lewis T. PATTERSON of Davis county, H.H. PATTERSON of Des Moines and Roy Dean PATTERSON of Bloomfield, and many close friends throughout the Iowa Conference and in the various towns in which she has resided.
