DARLENE BOWDEN
Longtime Paradise resident, Darlene Bowden passed away May 20, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Gridley, CA on August 22, 1938 to Evelyn and Dale T. Beers, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Warren Bowden; her son, Steven Bowden; daughter, Shari Bowden Tucker; and grandson, Trevor Harris.
Darlene was an athlete and an active member of the community.
She grew up in Durham, CA and graduated from Durham High School in 1956. In 1958, she was pitcher and team president for the championship Durham Women's AAA fast pitch softball team. She continued her involvement with Women's fast pitch softball for many years, both as a team organizer and player, first in Durham, then later after moving to Paradise in 1958.
Always an ardent and active supporter of public education, she was involved in the early days of the Paradise Preschool Association. Darlene, along with her husband Warren, were part of the founding and early success of the Gold Nugget Days Celebration, and later, Gold Nugget Museum Committees. She was the chairman of the Gold Nugget Parade for many years during the 1970's and early 1980's.
Later in life, she enjoyed time with her family, her pets and her garden.
Graveside services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Paradise Cemetery, 960 Elliott Road, Paradise, California.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to may donate to the Gold Nugget Museum, or a charity of their choosing, in care of Chapel of the Pines 5691 Almond Street, Paradise, California 95969.
