William was born and raised in Chicago. His mother died when he was 16 years old. His father moved the family to Madisonville, Kentucky, where William graduated from Madisonville High School with the Class of 1959 and enlisted in the Marines 1 July 1959 after graduating from high school.
William and Paula Gray were married before he re-enlisted 25 April 1963, at the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Madisonville.
William served with the Guard Detachment at Clarksville Base before going to Vietnam. When he arrived in Vietnam, Willaim was assigned to H&S Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. He was due to rotate back home during the first week of March 1966. William was shot by an enemy sniper, while the company was waiting for a helicopter pick up at Landing Zone
Sparrow near the vicinity of Van Ly (1) and 10 kilometers west northwest of Duc Pho, during Operation Dougle Eagle.
William was married and served his country for 6 years,7 months and 2 days and was KIA #2,684.
