Tomb Inscription:

ADELPHIA FLORENCE

Adelphia Florence White a daughter of Major Martin White and Mary (White) White, born in Washington, Rhea County, TN, growing up as a young girl during the Civil War. While her father was serving in the war their home was destroyed and two young brothers died.

By 1871 the Major and his family moved to Lampasas, where Adelphia and his other children were educated, and where the Major was one of the early educators. On Oct. 29, 1880 in Lampasas she married JOHN MARKWARD. Their children were born and raised at their homestead, with a "cook's quarters" behind it, both built by master carpenter Theo Bauerfeind who was a friend of Adelphia's father from TN, and he was assisted by her maternal grandfather, blacksmith and mason John S. White who had also left TN for TX. (Theo Bauerfeind completed the "cook's quarters" in 1875, where John then resided, as did he and Adelphia when they married. Prior to the completion of the "cook's quarters", John Markward resided at the Gracy Hotel in Lampasas, and near his mercantile store across from the Court House. Theo completed the larger "Markward House" in 1883 for them to expand into and where later their children were born and raised.)

Two of their children died as infants; the other three children were educated in Lampasas and all received TX college degrees.

Adelphia died a few months after the death of their infant son, Solan Lee Markward. Adelphia and John have full length matching granite stones, and a tall plinthe in front of their matching stones, was erected in Adelphia's name, next to a tall plinthe erected for their first-born son, John Carl Markward, who died young.

(Biographical material provided by Annette (Langley) Markward, wife of John Markward, great grandson of John and Adelphia (White) Markward of Lampasas.)
