SAMUEL SMITH
DIES AT 81;
SERVICES SET

Samuel Jefferson Smith, a retired farmer and a resident of Carlsbad and area for the past 29 years, died Tuesday evening in a local hospital at the age of 81.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Carpenter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B.R. Moffitt, pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery.

Smith was born Dec. 16, 1879, in Gatesville, Tex. He moved to Carlsbad in 1932, from Swearington, Tex. At the time of his death he and his wife of 53 years, Alice Maggie Lee Smith, made their home at 1218 West Mermod. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith is presently hospitalized.

Survivors, besides the wife, are two sons, Sam S. and James E. Smith, both of Carlsbad; three daughters, Mrs. Gertie Nance of Carlsbad, and Mrs. Fontie Richards and Mrs. Norma Lee Wright, both of Dallas, Tex.; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Bennett of Olton, Tex., and Mrs. Lola Bennett of Clarendon, Tex.; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
