Our Sweetheart, Dad, grandpa, Brother, Uncle, teacher and friend Rex Austin Skidmore passed away peacefully at home Saturday January 10, 1998.
He was born in Salt Lake City, New Year's Eve in 1914 to Charles Henry and Louise Wangsgaard Skidmore. He spent his childhood in Brigham City, graduating form Box Elder High School. He was school play manager, newspaper editor, Boys Association president, debate team member, and state tennis doubles champion. He began attending the University of Utah in 1932, leaving on an LDD mission to England in 1934. He formed many lasting friendships which he maintained through the years as a member of the Windson Club, and association of former British missionaries.
He graduated from the University of Utah in 1938 with a BA in history and completed an MA in soclology in 1939. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phl. Pl Kappa Alpha, and Pl Gamma MU.

On August 31, 1939,he married his sweetheart, Knell Spencer, in the Salt Lake Temple. This loving relationship of 58 years will continue for time and all eternity.

In 1941 he received his Ph.D in soclology from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Utah State University faculty in 1941 and left to work as an FBI special agent during World War 11. In 1945,he began a forty year tenure at the University of Utah where he was Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work. He served as Dean for twenty years, developing a doctoral program, planning and raising funds for the new social work building,developing a traing program for Native American social workers creating an emphasis in corrrections which gained national recongition, and developing field work settings for students in business and industry. He authored 27 books and 77 articles. He was a board member of the Boy Scouts of America, Prisident of the Utah State Conference on Social Welfare, President of Traveler's Aid and a member of President Lyndon B Johnson's Comittee on Corrections. In 1996, He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from the University of Utah and was chosed Utah Social Worker for the decade 1966 to 1975 by the NASW Utah Chapter.

He demonstrated a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and served diligently in church callings as a high councilor, stake president, regional representative and as chairman of the committee that developed the Teacher Development Program for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He sepecially enjoyed his callings as teacher and home teacher. During 1981-82, he and his wife served as special representatives for the internation Mission in the Holy Land. He has served as a Salt Sake Temple sealer since 1985.

He was a master teacher who taught by example living and practicing one of his favorite sayings-- 'The essence of LOVING IS GIVING not getting.' He enjoyed tennis, hiking, the beauties of nature, family time together, and uplifting others. He loved eyeryone and everyone who knew him loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Knell; sons Lee (Christine), and Larry; grandchildren, Leesa (Darin) Leonard, Megan (Jimmy) Chepkwurui, and Steven Skidmore; and his 'adopted' family, Ehab, Kim, Maryn, Eliya, and Teric Abunuwara. He is also survived by sisters, Zella (Eldon) McEntire, Mary (Lyman) Condie; brother Jay (Anna Jean) Skidmore; sister-in-law, Marion Skidmore; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14, at noon, in the Momumbent Park 3rd Ward, 2215 East Roosevelt Ave. (1460 South) Friends and family may visit Tuesday evenign from 5:30-8p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 200 East or at the Church from 10:30-11:45 Wednesday morning. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
