Thelma was born at Sanford, Maine, in 1907. A 1986 obituary erroneously recorded her as having been born in the state of Connecticut, possibly because her mother died in 1910 at Waterbury, CT.

"Births - July 18 - Born to the wife of Carl Cobb, a daughter." (Aug. 9, 1907, The Sanford Tribune)

She was only three years old when her mother died. Thelma married twice. Her husbands, likely unbeknownst to her, were first cousins, about four times removed.

She married Walter Earl Horne in 1925 at age 18. They were the parents of two children; June L. and Carl F. Horne. The marriage ended in divorce.

Thelma's second marriage was to Roland Burton Gowen on September 22, 1937 at Sanford, Maine. They were the parents of one child; Fay Idelle Gowen.

Thelma died at age 78 at Humana Hospital at Kissimmee, Florida, after having suffered a heart attack at home during the night on Friday, January 31, 1986. She was survived by her husband, Roland, her children, June, Carl and Fay as well as 16 grandchildren.
