Dirk James Belt, 51, of Birch Street, Attleboro, died unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, January 1, 2011. He was the spouse of Thomas Joseph Belt to whom he was married on May 20, 2004 and with whom he shared 15 years.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 18, 1959, he was a son of the late Jacob and Ellen Catherine (Killoran) Belt. He resided in Attleboro for most of his life. Mr. Belt was a 1977 graduate of Bishop Feehan High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Psychology from St. John's College in Boston in 1981.
Mr. Belt later attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. where he received his Masters degree in social work. Mr. Belt served as a Marian Brother in Washington, D.C. and Stockbridge, Massachusetts. While residing in Washington, D.C. he was employed as a bilingual social worker.
He received his DOE teacher certification for elementary education and received teacher training at Cambridge College and Taunton Public Schools from 1998- 2001.
Mr. Belt devoted his career to helping others, particularly children and the elderly. Currently, he was employed as a special needs tutor for the Horace Mann Educational Associates in Franklin. Previously, Mr. Belt was employed as an early intervention worker and ABA therapist for Horace Mann Educational Associates from the autumn of 2006 – August 2009.
He was employed as a classroom educator from 2002 – 2005 having served at various Massachusetts public schools including Seekonk, Brockton, Fall River and New Bedford.
Mr. Belt served as a substitute teacher with various Massachusetts public schools including Seekonk, Taunton, North Attleboro and the King Philip district.
He served as an elder advocate by volunteering as a Board Member of the Attleboro Council on Aging and at various nursing and rehabilitation facilities in the greater Attleboro area.
Mr. Belt served as a foster parent for the Massachusetts Department of Youth and Families for several years.
Previously, Mr. Belt was employed as a case manager coordinating client services for the Aids Action Committee in Boston.
He provided professional services in the area of direct support services for the former BETA Community Services, now BETA Community Partnerships.
Five years ago, Mr. Belt founded the Attleboro chapter of the 4-H organization.
He was a member of Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro.
Mr. Belt was a member of Lilac – a Latin American social club in Boston.
In addition to his spouse of 6 years, he leaves two children: Stephanie Lopez Belt, age 10, a student at Brennan Middle School and Christopher Lopez Belt, age 9, a student at Studley Elementary School; two sisters: Mary Ellen (Belt) Lavoie and her husband, Steven Lavoie, of Attleboro and Jacqueline (Belt) Jarvis and her husband, Paul Jarvis, of Attleboro; a brother: Jacob J. Belt and his former spouse, Cynthia (Mould) Belt both of Seekonk; his mother-in-law: Alice E. (Donohue) Simonin of East Providence; two generations of nieces and nephews; more than 60 cousins in the United States, Canada and Holland and several extended family members and dear friends.
