Margaret Furlow, first wife of Thomas Meriwether Gilmer Powers, m. 7-15-1851 Morgan Co., GA CH

Mary Elizabeth Allen, second wife of Thomas Meriwether Gilmer Powers and mother of his children, b. 01/30/1835 Green Co., GA d. 01/05/1873 bur Zebulon Methodist Church Cemetery; Zebulon, GA, where the Allen family was located.

For a long time it was believed that Margaret Furlow Powers, first wife, was Thomas Meriwether Gilmer Powers' only wife and was the mother of his children. I sent out several printouts to that affect. One elderly cousin, Tina Green, had told her niece that Thomas M. G. Powers had married an ALLEN, but since I had found his marriage to Margaret Furlow in Morgan Co., I had assumed Tina was in error. The truth was uncovered when I found T.M.G. Powers in the Atlanta Directory dating 1859. A descendant of his searched the county and found what we assumed was him marrying Ms. Allen. It was listed 1859 Fayette County L.M.G. Powers married M. E. Allen December 7, 1854. I later found him listed as the guardian of several Allen children. Later we found Thomas Meriwether Gilmer Powers in the 1860 Ga census listed as Thos Powers age 27 with wife, E. Powers age 25, his first child, Ernest, and three of the Allen children, one of which was Conrelia Allen. I assumed that since his wife was only 25 that the three Allen children were not her children. It was later confirmed that the children were her siblings. This ALLEN-POWERS connection was confirmed when we discovered one of the Allen children, Cornelia Allen, married to a Green. T.M.G. Powers' orphaned daughter, Jammie Lou Powers, was living in the Green household and was later buried in the Green family plot with her mother's sister, Cornelia Allen Green.
In the 1880 Georgia census the children of T. M. G. Powers are listed in the homes of others in Senoia, Georgia which suggests that Mary E. Allen Powers died soon after or before her husband.
