On 1 May 1852, he purchased 35.64 acres of land in the Dolson Township of Clark County Illinois. Since that time the boundaries between Dolson and Martinsville Townships have changed. The land now resides in the Martinsville Township.
He was a farmer and served in the Civil War on the Union side. He enlisted on 15 Nov 1861 in Indiana and mustered out on 5 Jan 1865. He was a Private in F Company, 50th Indiana Infantry.

(Lung fever back then was most likely what we call pneumonia.)
