John Bennett was a native of Ware County and a son to Henry Bennett (1808-1862) and Nancy Corbitt (1815- 1885) of the Glemore district of Ware County. John moved with his parents about 1848 to Clay County, Florida where he met and married Sarah Wilson, a daughter of Jesse Wilson.

In 1875, John and his family moved back to Georgia and settled in Clinch County, Georgia near the Okefenokee Swamp. They lived there for five years and then moved to Camden County and few years later they moved back to Clay County, Florida that's where his wife Sarah died.

Mr. Bennett moved back to the Ware County area where he died at the age of 84. John is buried at the Providence Camp Branch Church Cemetery where he was a member of.
