Was a Charleston merchant. His partners included Daniel Bourdeaux and Pierce Butler. During the Revolution provided supplies to the Continental Line. Active in politics, elected to the SC Senate 1783 and 1785. Between 1773-1786 received grants for 16,383 a in Charleston, Colleton, Nineysix and Camden districts, including 12,447 a on the south of the Edisto River. In 1785 tax return owned 2817 a. and 63 slaves in Colleton Co. At his death he possessed plantations on Daniels Island in St Thomas & St Denis Parish, and at Round O Savannah, St Bartholomew Parish. He was deceased by 30 Sept 1799 when his son died.
