After the war there was embarasement about not being a veteran and George pursued a move to California where his Uncle Russ Ayars was living.
There he went into the furniture business which he had learned in Grand Rapids. He also married Joyce Carpenter, whose families had decades past moved west from the Dakotas. George and Joyce had two sons, Mike and Jeff. On occasion George would come back to Michigan, but never brought his sons.
Although his brother Don was a top Cadillac salesman, George wanted a Mercedes to drive. He was a meticulus dresser like his father and had a gift to make everyone feel at ease. He loved to golf and moved eventually to Arizona to retire and play more golf.
Joyce died of cancer in 1977. George then moved to Arizona and married then Mary Wyturria who shortly afterwards also died of cancer. Thirdly George Married Lois Brown "Brownie" of Grand Rapids. George and Brownie split their lives between a condo in Grand Rapids and a condo in Care Free, Arizona. George himself became very sick in Fall of 1980. His nephew Kirk Vredevelt visited him at Butterworth hospital, where Uncle George persisted to encourage Kirk to vote for Republican candidate George Bush for a second term as president. He also encourgaged Kirk to become the families "domini" preacher in Dutch. feeling well enough George traveled to Arizona for the Winter. His sickness increased and he died before the years end. His brother Don and sons Mike and Jeff scattered his ashes on his favorite golf course in Carefree Arizona.
