John Hess was born to Balser Hess II and Sarah Immell on 10 August 1810 near Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He married Barbara Rohrer 12 November 1834. She died on 19 August 1846. He married second to Hannah Rowand Clemens 11 Oct. 1853. John died on 22 March 1872. Both Barbara and John are buried at Sparklin Cemetery, south of Goshen, Indiana.
