He was born September 30, 1920, in Burlington, ND, the son of Arthur and Florence (Nichols) Durbin. He was reared and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School. After graduation he attended Minot State Teachers College.
He entered the United State Army on February 21, 1945, serving during World War II and he was stationed in the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged on December 8, 1946. Richard was well known in Minot as a carburetor expert. He worked for Hancock Studebaker in Minot until he opened 5th Ave Repair, which in 1966 became Service Incorporated and was located on North Hill in Minot. He retired in 1971. Richard was once married to Arlaine Helstedt.
Richard was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Minot.
Survivors: sons, Danny Durbin (Linda), Centerville, MN and Jimmy Durbin (Marge), Kimberly, WI; daughters, Claudia Gillespie (Ken), Minot, ND, Sherry Rogers (Gary), Lovelock, NV and Colleen Bledsoe (Victor), Parker, KS; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Bakken (Clifford), Minot and Donna Davenport, Lake Ellsinore, CA; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ray and James Durbin and his best friend, George Weaver.
