William was born to Silvanus and Sarah (Gatchell) Wright, Jr. in Uhrichsville, Ohio. His parents owned a farm, and William grew up with 14 siblings. On 18 May, 1898, he married the lovely Estella Viola Gantz, 10 years his junior. Shortly after marrying, they moved to Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA and William began a long history as a telegrapher and then a telephone operator with the railroad. In Pennsylvania they had two children, Anna Louise and Paul Sylvanus. Their third child, William Edwin, Jr. was born in Ohio, (unknown why they went back to Ohio) and the family traveled back to Pennsylvania, settling in Carnegie. By 1930, all of their children had moved out to California, and William and Estella shortly followed.

The couple spent their later years watching their grandchildren grow in Sunny California. William experienced a stroke which paralyzed the left side of his face. He lived for some time after that, enjoying the rabbits he and Estella raised on their "ranch" in Lemon Grove. Estella survived her husband by 3 years. Their son, William, Jr., died in 1951 of a stroke.
