DON GEORGE WALLENSTEIN
Jan. 13, 1924 - Jan. 21, 2011

Gresham resident Don George Wallenstein died Friday, Jan. 21. He was 87.

A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A committal service with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Don was born Jan. 13, 1924, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to George and Stella (Daniels) Wallenstein. The family moved to Gresham in the early 1940s and Don graduated from high school in 1942. He enlisted in the Army the following November and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1948.

On June 28, 1946, Don married Lorene Jennings. They adopted two children and raised them in Gresham. Lorene died in 1997. Don married Mette Jensen. She died in 2009.

Don loved to hunt. He grew up fishing and swimming in the swimming holes along Henrys Fork of the Snake River. In later years, he continued fishing for Lorene, who enjoyed the result of his efforts. Don belonged to the Elks Lodge for 48 years. He loved to travel, whether it was cruises to Alaska or to his timeshare in Cancun, Mexico, which was located on the ninth hole of a golf course. Don enjoyed playing golf and once hit a hole-in-one in the mid-1990s. When he got the morning newspaper, he always read the comics first and completed the crossword puzzle. He also enjoyed feeding the ring-necked turtle doves and morning doves in his driveway every morning.

Survivors include his son, George Wallenstein of Portland; daughter, Bonnie Richard of Gresham; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Oregon Food Bank, P.O. Box 55370, Portland, 97238.
