PORTAL, Ga. -- Mrs. Helen Deal Carter, age 86, died Thursday evening, January 5th, at Ogeechee Area Hospice inpatient facility in Statesboro. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was the daughter of the late Herbert Deal and Ruby Dixon Deal. Helen was a 1947 graduate of Statesboro High School. She was employed with Sears of Statesboro for over 15 years as a clerk in the service department. Helen was a longtime member of the Portal First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, F.N. Carter Jr.; two sons, Joey Herbert Carter and F.N. Carter III (Toby); and a sister, Betty Brannen.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Latrelle Carter of Portal; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Eric Hartlein of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Patty Carter of Portal; six grandchildren, Keri Carter of Portal, Heather and David O'Dell of Arkansas, Noelle and Scott Holland of Cleveland, Ga.; Scott and Amanda Carter of McDonough, Michael Carter of Atlanta and Travis Carter and Erika Aldrich of Portal; eight great-grandchildren, a sister, Kitty Reynolds of Statesboro; and a brother and sister-in-law, Lemuel and Grace Deal of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive visitors Sunday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson with the Rev. Don Berry officiating. Interment will follow in Portal City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Carter, E.C. "Max" Carter Jr., Mark Smith, Lemuel Deal Jr., Glenn Deal and Wayne Deal.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Portal First Baptist Church, 204 Baptist Street, Portal, GA 30450.
Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory of Statesboro is in charge of arrangements.
