Mernie E. Weiss, age 91, of Tomah, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Franciscan Skemp Heathcare Center in LaCrosse.

She was born Feb. 28, 1913, to Arthur and Jennie (Carey) Day in the Township of Wellington.

She was united in marriage to Carl John Weiss on April 6, 1935, at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Tomah. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1992.

After graduating from high school, she attended Teachers Training. She taught at Ranch Creek Elementary School.

Mernie was a faithful member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church and a member of the Mission Circle. She was a member of the Railroad Women's Club and served as past president.

She worked as a nursing assistant at Tomah Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons, John (Mary Jane) of Port Washington, and Roger (Diane) of Tomah; two daughters, Maxine (E. Michael) Keppler of Sheboygan, and Carol Baumgarten of Sparta; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Nevis Beardsley and Ruby (Robert) Jerdee, both of Tomah, June Hazen of Washington, Dorothy Raymond of Texas, Jenny (Andy) Justmann of Waupaca, and Carol (Jay) Tallent of Oklahoma; a brother, Keith (Mardel) Reynolds of Tomah; and a brother-in-law, Ray Grovesteen of Tomah; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carl, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Weiss; and two sisters, Virginia Hamilton Grovesteen and Phyllis Katuin; a brother, Russel Day; infant twin sisters; and three brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah. Pastor Donald R. Buch officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Tomah.
