Cynthia Waggoner was born in Virginia (now W. Virginia) in 1839, the daughter of Peter A. Waggoner and Sarah Oswalt. In 1851, she moved with her family to Sauk County, Ohio, where they lived until 1854. From there they moved to Richland County in Wisconsin, settling in the town of Rockbridge, where her father bought land and improved a farm. On Dec. 16, 1858, Cynthia married Edward Murphy, with whom she had ten children - James William, Joseph Warren, Mary A., Margaret, Alice, Robert, Cora, Eldora, Lewis, and Simon. In her old age, she moved south to Nebraska to live with her daughter, Margaret.
