Madelyn Branning grew up on a farm in "Branningville," now Atco, in Damascus Township, Pennsylvania. She was born November 14, 1892, the daughter of Walter Freeman Branning and Alice Eva Decker.

Madelyn graduated from Mansfield Normal School in 1913. She then taught in several one room schools in Pennsylvania and New York state. Her husband-to-be John Edward Sloan, a school trustee, hired her to teach in a one room school near Rutsonville, New York. Madelyn married John on June 30, 1920 and they lived near or in Wallkill, New York the rest of their lives, for a while on a dairy farm. Her sister Juanita was bridesmaid at the wedding which took place at the homestead. Her brothers Coe and Grover attended. A son, John B. Sloan was born on July 4, 1939.

Madelyn was very active in the Shawangunk Dutch Reformed Church near Wallkill. She was a choir member, a Sunday School teacher and was President of the Ladies Aid Group. The Wallkill Womens club activities where she served as President was her first love. She was chairman of the Red Cross for the Town of Shawangunk, a secretary of the Red Cross; and a volunteer at the Wallkill Health Center.

Madelyn was an excellent cook and enjoyed giving dinner parties. She won many ribbons at the Ulster County Fair for baked and canned goods. [ had garden & canned most of their food]


Madelyn lived a long life. When she died August 9, 1992 in Wallkill, NY, she had nearly reached the century mark. She is buried in the Brunswick Rural Cemetery. Her only son John cared for her until her death in her home in Wallkill, N.Y.

Madelyn cared for her Uncle Artemus, the last remaining relative; he lived with her for the last 3 years of his life till his death in 1931, after being on the family homestead. In later years, he suffered from dementia. He was single and had been sheriff for many years.
