Roy was the son of William D. Berry and his first wife, Fannie Mae Fisk. His mother died when he was four years old, and his father remarried. His stepmother, "Jennie" Ash Berry, raised him as though he were her own.

Roy married a widow, Essie (Casteel) Smith 3 May 1934 in Roodhouse, Greene County, Illinois. Essie had two children with her first husband: Calvin Smith and Marian Smith Nebergall. Roy was equally loving to them as his stepmother had been to him. After Essie's death, Roy finished raising her only grandchild, Virgil Nebergall, until his tragic death at 19 in an auto accident.

Roy worked as the clerk of the Selective Service office in Roodhouse for many years, and was active in the Roodhouse American Legion.
