He was the husband of Katherine Gregory Dudley.
A native of Norfolk, Dudley had 47 years of service with the fire department at his retirement in 1972. He rose through the ranks and had held every post in the department except fire chief.
He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church.
Besides his wife, survivors include eight daughters, Mary Dudley Vaughn of California, Barbara Dudley Rumsey of Virginia Beach, Shirley Jean Dudley, Katherine Dudley Smith, Audrey Dudley Chamnes, and Elizabeth Dudley Barker of Norfolk, Marion Dudley Barion Buell and Patricia Dudley Parham of South Carolina; five sons, James M. Dudley Jr. of Newnan, Ga., Walter V. Dudley, Steven S. Dudley and George Dudley of Norfolk, and Gregory A. Dudley of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Robert L. Bennett of Louisiana; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Dr. James M. Nowell. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
