"The passing away of Mrs. H.J. Jones leaves a vacancy in the ranks of Elko's mothers that cannot be filled, says the Elko Independent. She lived in Elko 42 years and was well and intimately known to all the old residents.
Mrs. Jones was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cullen. She was born in Austin, Nevada, on the 22d of October, 1864. In September 1870 she came with the family to Elko and lived here ever since. She was educated in the public schools and at the State university when it was located here. Leaving school she engaged in teaching and taught 5 years in the schools of this county. January 29, 1885, she married Henry J. Jones, who survives her.
On the 7th of this month she was attacked by pneumonia and at 9:30, on the night of the 13th, her spirit forsook its earthly tenement and passed into the great unknown. Love, science and tender care could not stay its departure. An aged mother, 3 sisters, Mrs. Igo, Mrs Keeler and Mrs Bailey, a sorrowing husband, one daughter, Miss Vernie E., and 2 sons Harry L and Leslie B, survive. None were present at her bedside when she crossed over except Miss Vernie and Mr. Jones. The mother and 2 sisters are in San Francisco, Mrs. Igo is in Elko and Harry and Leslie are on the way here."
