William I. Purnell, 85, of Pleasant View Retirement Home, Manheim, formerly of Lititz, died Tuesday in Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Gilberton, April 15, 1916, he was a son of the late William H. and Irene Neifert Purnell. He was a graduate of Gilberton High School and Kutztown University. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Gilberton High School and later taught in Mount Penn High School, Berks County, serving as department head, assistant high school principal, senior class adviser, basketball coach and athletic director, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Kiwanis, PSEA, NEA, MPEA, Lititz Young Mens' Business League and Pennsylvania Athletic Directors Association. His wife, the former Evelyn Fellows, died in 1979. Surviving are two daughters, four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown. The Rev. Richard Purnell will officiate. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Frackville.
