The 5th Cavalry Regiment was formed in January, 1863, by consolidating the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions which had served along the Georgia coast. 2nd Cavalry Battalion contained five companies organized during the late fall of 1861 and Ebeneza was assigned to Company D. The 5th Cavalry was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Bird, Lieutenant Colonel M. Cumming, and Major Richard J. Devant, Jr. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh. It was sent to Mississippi and placed in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
Serving under W.W. Allen and R.H. Anderson, the unit participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
The field officers were Colonels Robert H. Anderson and Edward Bird, Lieutenant Colonel R.J. Davant, Jr., and Major William H. Wiltberger.
