In 1872 the parents and their six surviving sons immigrated to Quebec and settled in Châteauguay County. William soon moved to Montreal where he married Christina McCuaig and raised nine children.
In 1905, after retiring from the British Empire Insurance Company, he decided to sail home to Scotland for a final visit. Sadly he fell ill and died aboard ship just four days out from Newfoundland and was buried at sea.
